Welcome Message from
APAO Secretary-General
  Issue 6 - October 2022

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is our immense honor and pleasure to welcome you to the 38th Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, co-hosted by the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology and co-sponsored by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).

The APAO 2023 Congress will be especially meaningful as we revert to a face-to-face conference after three years. I am confident that the meetings and the programs will be the best showcase for the theme of “Reconnect & Collaborate.”

On behalf of APAO and our Member Societies, I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to
Dr Kenneth Fong, APAO 2023 Congress President, and our colleagues at the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology, for organizing this distinctive meeting. The Congress is expected to have an attendance of over 5,000 delegates.

I would also like to convey our deepest gratitude to Prof Tin Aung, APAO 2023 Scientific Program Committee (SPC) Chair and the strong SPC with more than 100 members, for their dedication and hard work, without which we would not be able to put together such a remarkable scientific program.

Above all, we are truly grateful to all of you who have chosen to join us in Kuala Lumpur for the APAO 2023 Congress. It is indeed your participation that has made all the preparatory efforts for this Congress worthwhile.

We look forward to welcoming you all to this important and exciting scientific meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

Warmest personal regards,

Prof. Clement THAM
Secretary-General, Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology

Malaysian cuisine is an experience in itself and the spread available is impossible to describe here! Being a multiracial and multicultural country, the cuisine is an amalgamation of multiethnic local flavor with some influence from neighbouring countries.

Rice or nasi is the main staple and of note are 'nasi lemak' (rice cooked in coconut milk), 'nasi ayam' (chicken rice), soto (rice cubes in a savory broth) and the banana leaf platter. Speciality dishes like the nasi kerabu, nasi dagang and nasi ulam are crowd pleasers too.

Satay must be savored when in Malaysia. It comes in a variety of meats marinated and grilled to perfection. 'Roti canai' and 'tosei' are popular flat breads dipped in dal curry and best eaten with fingers. If you like noodles, our 'char kuey teow' - a fried flat noodle dish is a popular hawker dish. Malaysia also boasts noodles in various broths such as 'laksa' and 'mee kari'.

'Kuehs' are bite sized savory or sweet delicacies, popular as canapés. The 'karipap' - akin to a small fried potato curry filled pastries and 'vadai' - made from lentils, are examples of savory kuehs. Famous sweet 'kuehs' include the 'seri muka', 'kuih lapis', 'ang ku kueh' and 'apam balik' to name a few.

Malaysia is also rich in its fruits. The 'durian', notoriously known as the king of fruits, is not for the faint hearted. Nevertheless, once hooked on it, you will find that you just can't get enough of it. Other favorite local fruits not to resist are 'rambutans', 'nangka' (jackfruit), 'cempedak', mangosteen and mangoes.

Kuala Lumpur is dotted with international restaurants where one might find food from your home country too. So do come over and sample our food. It will be an experience to remember.
