Rice or nasi is the main staple and of note are 'nasi
lemak' (rice cooked in coconut milk), 'nasi ayam'
(chicken rice), soto (rice cubes in a savory broth) and
the banana leaf platter. Speciality dishes like the nasi
kerabu, nasi dagang and nasi ulam are crowd pleasers
too.
Satay must be savored when in Malaysia. It comes in a
variety of meats marinated and grilled to perfection.
'Roti canai' and 'tosei' are popular flat breads dipped
in dal curry and best eaten with fingers. If you like
noodles, our 'char kuey teow' - a fried flat noodle dish
is a popular hawker dish. Malaysia also boasts noodles
in various broths such as 'laksa' and 'mee kari'.
'Kuehs' are bite sized savory or sweet delicacies,
popular as canapés. The 'karipap' - akin to a small
fried potato curry filled pastries and 'vadai' - made
from lentils, are examples of savory kuehs. Famous sweet
'kuehs' include the 'seri muka', 'kuih lapis', 'ang ku
kueh' and 'apam balik' to name a few.
Malaysia is also rich in its fruits. The 'durian',
notoriously known as the king of fruits, is not for the
faint hearted. Nevertheless, once hooked on it, you will
find that you just can't get enough of it. Other
favorite local fruits not to resist are 'rambutans',
'nangka' (jackfruit), 'cempedak', mangosteen and
mangoes.
