The Malaysian traditional costumes are vibrant and as diverse as the different communities that make up our nation. Malays form the most prominent ethnic group in Malaysia and their attire would be the Baju Melayu for men and Baju Kurung or Kebaya for ladies which is usually worn with a headscarf. Batik or Songket, a traditional handwoven fabric is some of the materials used to design these outfits.

On special occasions, you would find the Chinese ladies in the auspicious elegant red Cheongsam classically made from silk or brocade. This outfit is a one-piece dress with a collar and clasps at the waist. Indians in Malaysia have maintained their roots in traditional dresses especially at special occasions.

The colourful Sarees are beautifully draped and worn by both the young and the old ladies. East Malaysians such as the Kadazan women, wear their traditional costume known as Papar, which is an embroidered one piece of black velvet or silk with gold thread along with a belt of silver coins. A headgear made of bamboo strips, known as Siung, is also worn. Ibans are an indigenous community in Sarawak. They are known for their warrior-like outfits and weaving of colourful, patterned cotton cloths called "Pua Kumbu".
