Meet Our New Member -
Kyrgyz Society of Ophthalmology

  Issue 10 - February 2025

As announced in December 2024, we are delighted to welcome three new member societies to the APAO. In our previous issue, we introduced the Maldives Ophthalmology Society.

In this edition, we are pleased to introduce the second new member – the Kyrgyz Society of Ophthalmology.

The Kyrgyz Society of Ophthalmology was established in 1995. Currently, there are 280 practicing ophthalmologists and 90 residents in the country. Three state medical universities graduate residents annually.

The mission of the society is to reduce blindness in Kyrgyzstan by creating a supportive environment for ophthalmology specialists. It aims to enhance the professionalism of members, protect their rights and interests, and promote the comprehensive development of ophthalmological science.

The society convenes four conferences annually dedicated to discussions on current problems and challenges in the field. Additionally, it conducts extensive public health education work among the population and promotes the implementation of new diagnostic technologies and treatments for eye diseases.

Let’s hear from President A/Prof. Chynara Bazarbaeva on what prompted her society to join APAO!

The history of ophthalmology in our country began in the 1930s, with successful efforts to combat trachoma. In the 1980s, cataract extraction with IOLs was introduced, and we led Central Asia in keratoplasty surgeries, though we no longer perform them due to legal restrictions.

Since 2004, I have been the liaison with the AAO, and since 2012, our society has been part of the Turkic-speaking countries' ophthalmology community.

In August 2023, we attended the Beijing Ophthalmology Conference, where we discussed joining the APAO. Membership will offer access to advanced training and help prevent blindness, especially glaucoma in our country.

A/Prof. Chynara Bazarbaeva
President

We look forward to closer collaborations with our friends from Kyrgyzstan!
