The 23rd APAO Congress was held in conjunction with the WOC 2008 in Hong Kong from June 28 – July 2, 2008.
Registration
The paid registration, including trade exhibitors, exceeded 13,019.
Scientific Program
With overwhelming support from over 40 organizations, more than 1,140 invited speakers presented lectures at 319 scientific sessions. There were also 205 free papers and over 1,960 international posters. The Chinese program included 510 oral presentations and 1,600 posters.
Sponsorship & Exhibition (All Sold out)
The Congress received encouraging support from the industry. All sponsorship targets were met, and all exhibition booths were sold out.
Promotion (E-based)
E-promotion in the form of a monthly e-newsletter was sent to ophthalmologists around the globe. The database included more than 30,000 doctors. A Congress banner was erected in the Departure Hall, and an immigration counter was especially arranged to help Congress delegates as they arrived at Hong Kong International Airport.
Venue (Voted one of the best)
The Congress was listed as one of the most important events held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, which was voted one of the best Congress venues in 2007.
Social Program (The East meeting the West)
A series of social programs were planned during the Congress with the theme of “East Meets West”. There were spectacular Oriental performances including fluorescent dragon dances, world champion martial artists and more. The Presidential Dinner was held at night at the Peak, which offers a panoramic view of the famous Victoria Harbor.
Surplus and Share for APAO
The surplus after the Congress was around US $3,269,930. APAO receives 7% of that amount, ie, ~US $228,895.
